Chinese

Welcome to Chinese!

Learning Chinese (Mandarin) is a rare opportunity for students to discover a new language and explore one of the world's oldest and most fascinating cultures. As one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, employers deeply value those who can speak Mandarin.

In lessons, students focus on the four main skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing, while also learning about Chinese traditions, festivals, and everyday life.

Because Mandarin is so different from English, this subject challenges our students in exciting ways. They learn to recognise Chinese characters and understand different tones used to communicate meaning. Mandarin is a subject that provides learners with academic challenge as well as fantastic opportunities for the future.

What will I study?

GCSE Chinese involves speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with exams at the end of the course.

The course offers opportunities for you to study topics such as family life, food and drink, holidays, education, jobs, and lifestyle etc. Aspects of Chinese culture are heavily embedded in the course.

Students will follow the AQA GCSE (9-1) in Chinese (Spoken Mandarin)

Stand out in a competitive job market

Research predicts that China will become the world’s largest economy by 2050. Unfortunately, very few people in the UK are taking Chinese GCSE courses. Therefore those young people equipped with Chinese language skills and cultural understanding will no doubt have an edge in the future job market.
